NaNoWriMo Starts in just 3 1/2 days!

The first question I always get asked when I reference NaNoWriMo is, "What's that?"  The person asking the question generally has sort of a scrunched up skeptical look on their face, as if they've just heard that they're going to eat 25 lemons in a cold shower to win a prize.

The look I get from them is *the best.*  I have to admit that I toss the "word" out there pretty regularly, just to see their expression.  In fact, just thinking about all you who are reading this and the look on your face is making me chuckle.

NaNoWriMo is National Novel Writing Month.  I think they hold it in November because it goes with the NaNo part and it's an easy mnemonic sort of thing.

I'm not just writing about this because it's cool, though.  I'm writing because it's cool AND they've got a kids' version of it.  NaNoWriMo's Young Writers Program is awesome, too!  The kids get to make their own word challenge and they can dare others, as well.  I think the dare thing is pretty cool, personally.

So, what do you get if you hit your word-count goal?

  • Five copies of your book, in paperback!  (You have to pay shipping, though...)
  • An official Web Badge & Certificate
  • Bragging rights for the rest of your life.

If you're worried that you'll fall flat on your face, there are lots of support systems on their website already, and here's a blog post about what they've improved for this year!

Put your creative thinking caps on and go to!  Go to!
